VISITING ARTIST I AUGUST - OCTOBER 2019

COLOR STUDIES FROM CANNEY’S PIT

Painting in the cool water of the Manship Quarry, known as Canney’s Pit, was a unique opportunity to study an aquatic environment framed by Cape Ann’s warm tones of granite.

As a visiting artist I was submerged each day in the fresh water that makes local quarries the perfect summer swimming hole. The aquatic habitat required that I hold tight to the oil sticks that normally float in the ocean where I paint each year. Colors easily disappeared into the deep, released from my cold finger grip. These studies in oil stick on YUPO paper and in acrylic on canvas are site paintings which now serve as the color information for larger oil paintings on panel. Check back in a few months for additions to this gallery.
